When I did this originally I had a machine shop make about a dozen cast iron plates. They were Blanchard ground flat. Mill marks were not a problem. If I were doing over I would buy Stanley no. 5 or larger plane cheap at flea market and use as cast iron substrate. Cherry is not a good substitute for cast iron. If I were going to put this much effort into testing I would find a cast iron substrate.
