Maybe quartzite. Grain looks a bit wrong, but judging from a picture is a fools errand -- and I was always better with igneous rocks and ore minerals than sedimentary rocks and their metamorphic products.

Doesn't look like an agate to me. The grain looks macrocrystaline, like a marble, though I doubt it's one because a carbonate stone wouldn't trick you into rubbing a blade on it, they are softer than the blade.

Armchair petrography at its best! :D

Cool that you're messing with found stones too. You never know what kinds of useful stuff is lying around until you start experimenting.
