Thanks Dave…I did purchase one of the $20 grass hooks from tractor supply (the kind with a serrated blade that's the same on both sides). Talk about a tool-shaped object. The cutting edges were covered with paint! :D I sharpened it, but the steel is such shit that it's hard to get very sharp. It might be useful if I went away for a month and had to come back and cut really tall grass, but otherwise it's not much use.
By the way I'd love to learn to scythe, but I'm renting in cookie cutter suburbia, and I don't really want to deal with opprobrium from the landlord or the neighbors, so that will have to wait.
