Focus: sharpening. If we’re mainly talking about people starting out, they will fall into two broad groups: Group 1 has some degree of over-the-shoulder mentoring on sharpening. They will quickly learn. Group 2 comprised of those on their own—they will have to pick it up from online clues. Problem: No one is born knowing what sharp is. Therefore, it is helpful to Group 2 people to have 1 chisel which arrives working sharp, as a definition of what the target is. Same argument on planes—good to have 1 which is known to be in serviceable shape from the outset.
