The sanding that I've done has been generally on 6-8 foot runs of moulding that are either intended to be cut and wrapped around a case or applied in a kitchen.

I thought I was taking the easy way out (because it's intellectually lazy in my case, I took the time to make good hollows and rounds that are new and tightly fitted and can take a thin shaving without issue), but it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth, and then it could be easily spotted - which I didn't expect.

Everything finished off the plane always looks sharper, no matter how careful I've been sanding something like a moulding or door panel - you can still always see it.
