My first choice would be to make the end out of a solid thick plank that has been hollowed out to the shape you want. Its a waste of wood, but easy to do with a tablesaw, a few handplanes and a scraper.

My second choice would be a laminated shape with a facefame of solid wood. If you match the grain carefully it will be unnoticeable. It will also be more stable and stronger than the first option.
