... to see just how expensive the Stanley 51/52 combination was when it was produced.

It was $23.45 "in the early 1920s" according to Patrick's Blood and Gore.

trending forward with CPI from 1923 (Straw year chosen as early 1920s - there was quite a lot of inflation in the 1920s in the states, so the point chose does matter) to 2018 brings an effective current price (for both) of about $345.

This is not a perfect method, but we'll go with it (there are other factors that affect price - productivity, regulation, target market, etc). We would pay more in current dollars for a plywood shooting board in some cases (actually a lot, if you have to buy "add ons" than for the entire 51/52 combination....

...and the 51/52 didn't sell that well, even in a world still filled with pattern makers, etc.

Shootenstein is to satisfy my desire to make. I'd never buy it. If I ever decide down the road to make planes for money, I'll be glad to be nice to the people who don't agree with that. I did have the conscious thought at the end of a couple of days (I can't, again, emphasize just how physical it is to manually level, square, hammer and finish that much metal), though, that "if someone offered me $2500 to make one of these for them, i don't think I'd do it if I had a day job".
