That's correct. If you are cutting something agreeable and can keep them moving, the balance of factors is in your favor. If you are cutting not quite 45 degrees to a hard PH billet....well, I guess you can force the saw a little faster, but that can reward you with less than a flat plane and a blown out back side.

I only did it once with this PH. Coarse sandpaper caused the same discoloration on the end, and I'll do everything manually next time because of that. It actually took less time to hand saw and plane than to remove the burning, and hopefully very little scraping and filing will be needed to eliminate it from the ends. either that, or I'll just have to color the entire wood area with black magic marker and used motor oil to cover it up.

As far as it working well, you just never know while you're building it. We're old enough that it's hard to accept that potential for failure after as much effort, but the payoff is worth the risk when it works out. And I guess the learning when it doesn't is also worth it. Making infills has gotten easier, but it's certainly not easy. Everything is slow and hard (not hard as in difficult, but all of the materials are hard and difficult to work with compared to making a beech plane).
