Hi Derek,

Skew does lower the cutting angle. I posted the formula once here, and Leonard Lee either gives the formula or a tabulation in his book on sharpening.

The way to visualize the effect is that the shaving is moving up the bevel on the slant, much as a roadway is cut into a mountain on the slant rather than going straight up—it lowers the grade.

Nevertheless, I agree with your argument above about bedding angle.
