Managing the sharpening medium is just good common sense regardless of what sort it is. It's as valid and useful for sandpaper, PSA films, and cast-iron laps as it is for the most traditional natural stone.

If you don't distribute the load as you describe then you're just wasting abrasive, whether by the need to flatten excessively (in the case of friable stones) or by wearing out patches prematurely (in others).
