One thing I have done in the past, which others may not recommend, which is understandable, is to use a steel plate that is flat, and apply valve grinding compound on it and rub the stone on it until flat. you can use coarse and then fine to improve the surface. Works better (faster) depending on what type of stone you are flattening,
