Subject:
Narex heat-treatment process

Hopefully everybody is aware of Verhoeven's "Metallurgy of Steel for Bladesmiths and Others who Heat Treat and Forge Steel". It's the best short-ish (200 pages) treatment of the topic that I can recall seeing. http://www.hybridburners.com/documents/verhoeven.pdf

I was looking at something else in there recently, and noticed that it contains a reasonably detailed treatment of austempering (what Narex does) starting on page 115.

The short version is that they convert austenite to lower bainite rather than martensite as in a conventional quenching strategy.

For the relevant range of hardnesses (Rc59 in Narex's case) lower bainite is tougher than tempered martensite. That's why the Narex steel seems a little bit "chewy" and prone to forming wire edge.

Higher toughness at the same hardness is an unambiguously good thing (provided your sharpening process is up to it), and I would personally choose Narex's austempered low-alloy steel over O-1 or HCS conventionally quenched and tempered to Rc59 for that reason. IMO it's impressive when somebody can take basically the same raw materials (no high-alloy PM uber-steels here) and obtain superior performance via in improved process.

BTW the "bend a knife in a tube until it snaps" stress-test that David (I think) outlined previously absolutely *loves* austempered steels. See the pictures on p.116 of Verhoeven.
