If you clean off a stone and take a picture of it, I'll give you a good idea of whether or not it's a washita.

A soft arkansas stone generally looks like a bunch of particles smashed together, but a washita usually looks like a matrix with pores. Almost like a photographic negative of each other.

The pores on the washita allow it to cut well, even when the stone is "dull" and the washitas have a wider working range.

I shaved this morning (and most mornings the last few weeks) using a razor that I set up on a washita. It's a bit spartan, but with a linen, practical. I can't get an edge good enough off of an equivalently fast soft arkansas to just do that.

The only caveat to looking at a stone to tell what it is is that norton sold an awful large number of soft arkansas stones that look almost like their lilywhite.
