Warren in Lancaster, PA
I used a Carborundum stone for about 20 years, but around 1983 I switched to a King stone as the first stone in my routine. I have worn out four or five. I still use a Carborundum stone for turning gouges and sometimes narrow chisels that would gouge the water stone.

I have a Queer Creek sandstone which I could use as a first stone instead. I would probably like it better if it were a little softer. I also have a 22 inch Ohio sandstone wheel but I do not use it for day to day sharpening; most of my woodworking tools have not seen a grinding wheel since I acquired them.
