Yeah, there's no doubt that the Narex parers are brutish things, which I think is attributable to two things:

1. They have to keep the blades fairly thick/rigid to minimize warping during heat treatment. This goes back (once again) to the lack of post-machining.

2. Narex tends towards heavy chisel designs in general. If you look at the handles on their bench and firmer chisels they're pretty massive, even the premium ones. That sort of thing is why I'm more skeptical about their ability to design usable woodworking tools than I am about their metallurgy and manufacturing processes.

I'll PM you about the English parer sources. I'm interested.

I think the Blue Spruce ones are pretty nice in terms of form, but I simply can't get over the choice of A2 for a *paring* chisel. Even if one favors high-alloy steels for some applications (as I do) one has to acknowledge that paring isn't one of them.
