Interesting picture. As you say they obviously machined the hollow out before heat treatment. Now that I think about it it makes some sense as a way to reduce post-machining costs (these are clearly post-machined, which is unique for them. They're apparently trying to go move up the food chain without breaking the bank and landing themselves in LN/LV territory).

Narex steel does indeed form a pretty tenacious wire edge on just about any abrasive but diamond, and like most steels it's at its worst in that respect on "blunt" abrasives like SiO2. That's not inherently a bad thing, though, as it's a positive indicator for ductility and toughness. You just have to be careful to clean it up, particularly if you use natural stones.

It's not very similar to Chrome-Vanadium IMO, in particular it lacks the super-hard carbides and relatively coarse grain structure. It also does better at low edge angles. Also I believe that the Cr-V steels are limited to conventional martensitic heat treatment.

I have the parers. Of all of the chisels I've ever handled those took the longest by far to dial in. A 9" blade is just too much without post-HT machining IMO.
