Discard our previous discussion about retailers, I don't want it to make this seem like more than just an observation I've had from use of japanese chisels:

(and, I don't know if the narex chisels are hollowed consistently like that, if those just happened to be hollow).

Anyway, very little of a chisel needs to be flat for it to work well for dovetails. We're told often about the long reference source of a perfectly flat back, and david C often talks about bellying chisels. When I was a beginner, I was terrified of it. I've learned that I could use all of them well, and the diving that I thought would occur with hollow back single ura japanese chisels just hasn't happened. I think what's going on in terms of direction of cut is determined within a mm or two of the start of a cut, unless the cut is very light.

I'd encourage that student to use his chisels and pretend he never saw the hollow in the back for a while, and draw conclusions after use. He may not notice anything.

Another aside, and maybe it's just luck, but each time I've hardened something (irons, whatever) that's got a bevel on one side, it's hollowed in the opposite side of the bevel. They are blunt bevels when I do that (to prevent decarburization of the edge), but they are there nonetheless.
