"I know who Alan Peters is. Charlie tells me I'm nuts for thinking George is in a class with Alan as a maker and designer. I think Alan's stuff is wonderful, but George could make any of it and the converse isn't true (if you flip names). Notwithstanding the fact that they are very different makers, and both excellent."

I don't know who George is, but have followed your comments about him. Your comment sounds to me like talking about someone who is a good local theater player being described as someone who could have done Brando's part in whatever as well as Brando did it. They point is that Brando created it. And arguably created an approach all his own, it has been said.

The repertoire of skills in a Peter's piece is not all that impressive. But it only has to be what he needs it to be. But he produced work over a lifetime that had a distinctive style to it. I have no idea whether Elton John is as good a musician/composer as Beethoven, but Elton John has risen to prominence within his generation in a somewhat similar way. You don't get the credit unless you climb the mountain.

Another example would be Rob Cosman, who studied with several notable craftsmen including Peters. Rob obviously has skills. Don't think he will be remembered internationally for his furniture at all. Could be wrong, and he has made the mark he has made living just outside Saint John NB, my mother's home town, for that he has my respect. Because I could do what he did living in Toronto. I can't say I tried, and there you go with that.
