Hi Roger, and congrats on your joint.

That to me is what this is all about;
having a problem and applying your skills, knowledge, curiosity and reason to figure it out. It doesn't matter how many people figured it out before you, you figured it out, and you have an intimate understanding and knowledge of that joint; Far better than anyone that downloaded the instructions and copied it.

Even if no-one had ever seen the Stanley instructions or any other, given a hand plane and a curious mind you would figure it out, and you would have afar great understanding than copying a set of rules that told you what distance to set the cap iron.

To rely on others to give you all the answers obviously doesn't work. Because all of those that profess to know are just people. like you, and maybe not as curious or knowledgeable. And it doesn't matter if they work for the big plane makers of our time, it doesn't mean that the person designing planes has a passion and intimate knowledge of the function, it might mean that they just have a job.

To understand woodworking you have to approach with an open mind; When you look to others (especially those that are highly respected) to supply you with answers, you have a tendency to not question what they have told you, and that taints how and what you will see. Once you have closed that part of your mind to question, you are going to have a blank spot and miss part of the picture, even when it is right in front of your eyes.
