That's consistent with Kato & Kawai [*], which showed that increased face angle allowed higher setback while achieving ~equal tearout mitigation.

In particular they showed about the same degree of tearout reduction with 0.1 mm of setback and 50 deg face angle (on a 40 deg bed) as they did with 0.2 mm of setback and an 80 deg face angle. The 50 deg face angle had tearout at 0.2 mm setback.

This might also explain the residual differences in our respective setback-vs-depth results. The fact that I was using a shallower face means that I would get less effect from the cap iron at any given setback.
