For the average person not cycling through as many planes as me, an inexpensive norton fine india stone.

Another thing (like the sanding lap) that you can always tell yourself that you don't need. But if you have it, you'll find yourself using it - especially on things like card scrapers for rough work, knife sharpening, etc.

A fine india will do all but the most coarse correcting on a cap iron and have it ready for whatever is necessary for final finish.
