It looks like we're getting broadly similar results here.

We both agree that the forces are reasonable until the cap iron is
somewhere between 0 and 1 mil above the sole. We both agree that below that there is a range where cuts are technically feasible but increasingly difficult to the point of being undesirable. The point at which we each had to call it quits probably doesn't matter all that much, since we both agree that we wouldn't want to operate there anyway. The similarity in our respective "reasonability thresholds" is probably more significant.

As you say the remaining difference between our results probably comes down to the wood (and perhaps willingness to apply brute force :-). IIRC K&K used a softwood, so that might also explain why their preferred configuration was lower than either of ours.
