I like hickory for pins. I keep a piece of it around for just that reason. Oak also works good but I have used cherry and SYP should work also. Some are better than others but you can use almost anything for a pin. I guess you found out why it would be better to keep a little oak or hickory around. The best woodworking instruction is trial and error. ---Jack
