The fact that it's not about hand planing is important if we're discussing the potential for modifying cap irons that may go below the sole on a plane (but won't in the course of practical planing).

The initial conclusion when I wrote an article years ago was that an 80 degree cap iron ledge is a good idea because you can set it back more, and it worked in the video. That is, however, a bad setup for a plane (not necessarily for a machine, though).
