For some reason, Patrick, I'm not able to duplicate what you're doing with my setup. I don't know if my cap is steeper or what.

If I get a bit of time this weekend, I'll measure a set by microscope.

Stepping back from this a little bit, though, in over 5 years and I don't know how many board feet dimensioned, I've never been able to set the cap iron into the wood, but I have set the cap too close a few times and gotten a "hairy" surface, or got stopped in my tracks. Something easy to do intentionally.
