Hi William,
Yes, an edge float is much easier!
If you can use a mill, that's great, but an edge float is not at all hard to make with a file--it's just a thick saw that's only a few inches long. I made 6 edge floats this summer--4 skewed floats and two "normal" floats--and I would guess it only takes about an hour to file the teeth.
