Hi David and all,
The tool from the factory presents as stout or sturdy, rather than coarse. It seems 'right' for the purpose. I went out and checked an older much used shovel, and the green paint on the blade is intact wherever there hasn't been heavy digging. Must be epoxy. I add to the factory shellac on the wooden portions, each year.
