Re: Dimensioning: Question about roughing planes

Warren in Lancaster, PA
I use a jack plane that I made in 1978. I have never measured the camber or the cap iron distance. If there is too little camber, the corners will dig in, which will make the plane hard to push. If there is too much camber, a full width shaving will be too deep for comfort so you end up making just a narrow cut. Ideally you want to adjust the camber so that you get nearly full width for the depth of cut you normally use.

I suppose that one could find an ideal camber if he were constantly working the same timber, but that does not fit with the real world. So the camber is sort of a compromise between what is ideal for white pine and what is ideal for persimmon. And you want the depth of cut to be something that will not wear you out in just a few minutes. There are costs (like lack of intimacy) that come with having a fleet of jack planes for different timbers, and I think historically many workers used but one.
