Hand Tools

I'm most immediately contemplating side-escapement H&Rs (and have received the message to buy Larry's video loud and clear, thanks). I also would like to better understand the process of making mortised bench planes, to evaluate whether I want to do that. I would be using hand tools for all but initial stock sizing, and am willing to invest in learning new ones (for example, side and edge floats)

I've done a couple laminate planes, and as an engineer I clearly understand that any geometry that's feasible in a mortise plane can also be created in a laminate plane. With that said the process of making a laminate plane doesn't "speak to me" for lack of a better term. I wouldn't be doing this to sell but for the enjoyment of the pursuit itself, so that's an important consideration.
