I have made planes since 1975. A lot of the skills in maintaining wooden planes overlap with the manufacturing skills, so a guy who is going to make planes needs skill in use, and any really skilled user can make a good plane. The reason plane making developed as a trade and individual craftsmen stopped making their own has to do with how quickly and cheaply a specialist can turn out a plane.

A friend gave me the Whelan book about a dozen years ago, but I have misplaced it. I would not call it authoritative. It is a survey book of various types of planes, smoother. plough, rabbet, etc., helpful for someone who knows their way around planes, a bit weak on the fine points. More authority on this forum.

Paul Dzioba (Paul from NJ) made a strike block plane from the Whelan book some years ago. Whelan's design is supposed to be a copy of the 1793 Dominy plane. Unfortunately Whelan decided to change it from a double iron plane to a single iron, and he did such a poor job drawing the handle that Paul's handle looks odd also. Paul would have done a much better job if he had seen the picture that Whelan looked at.

I would say the Charlie Hummel's With hammer in Hand (1968) is more carefully done and has good pictures of planes. The book is expensive, but Charlie is working on a revised edition. There is a free online access through Chipstone and University of Wisconsin.
