Point accepted w.r.t. stone feel. I prefer Choseras, most Sigmas (the "1000 hard" is no fun IMO), and Bester/Imanishi to Shaptons, but everybody has their own take, and I have no experience with JNats and therefore a different baseline than you. I bought my Shapton Pros from Stu like you, but even so the fact that they're 15 mm thick means the price per unit abrasive is on the high side compared to all but Chosera.

w.r.t. light, I mostly rely on flash (Canon MT-24EX) for close-up work. It provides 2 positionable heads with ratio control. When combined with glint-management techniques like cross-polarization it's enough for almost all purposes.

The issue with positioning complex objects on a scope is what I was referring to when I mentioned "fixturing" in another post. At some point it becomes a lot easier to move a camera around a fixed subject laying in a "natural" position.

We basically agree about interpretation. I concede that you have a broader base of experience and are therefore likely better at it.

$6K is about what pro-level bodies go for (and the D4 was replaced last year by the D5), though for the sort of work we're discussing here you can get almost equivalent results with a $1000 body. It's harder to save on the lenses, camera supports, and lighting, though. If you shoot any sort of fast-moving sports the pro bodies do indeed basically make toast and choose your outfit. High frame rates with bang-on depth tracking don't come cheap. Those bodies are also built like tanks, which again comes in handy for sports work.
