I don't' know about others.

But for me this is a hobby, I make what I feel like making, when I feel like making it. Hand tools are just a means to an end (what I am making), and can be fun to use (I like sharp objects). If doing extra steps, or using some jig enables me to make what I want, I will do it. As for practicing, forget about it, I would rather make something (better use of my hobby time). I will say, the more I make, the better my skills get, so my reliance on crutches is slowly decreasing.

Of course hearing/seeing/learning about how to do things in a better way, is always useful. So people who do know what they are doing should definitely speak their minds.
