The idea that skill development ought to be replaced with gimmicks and gadgets is an old 20th century idea. It would be a lot more surprising to see such an attitude in the hand tool era.

Writing in 1812, Peter Nicholson suggested that one could adjust a tenon with a chisel or a rabbet plane if he had sawed carelessly, but that generally the tenon was made straight from the saw. Nicholson apprenticed as a cabinetmaker around 1779. I think learning to saw to the line is a valuable skill that is useful for a lot more than just making tenons;
