I rarely use the V- (or spear pint) cutter. 99% of the time the straight cutters are used. I would disagree that the V cutter is for finishing as mine also would leave a furrow if used straight-on. The straight cutters get very sharp and create a better finish.

The V cutter seems best used, in my opinion, when clearing out corners or cutting against a wall. I use a slight slicing action together with a light cut, turning it into the section.

For all router plane blades, including the V cutter, I hollow grind. This makes them easy to hone and creates a razor sharp edge.
