Right, and playing the devil's advocate, I don't know for sure that the work here generates appreciable heat or that in this case, that it makes a difference at the edge of the plane. It probably does, but other than knowing that the shavings sometimes come out warm, I don't know for sure that the heat generated is appreciable and that it's focused at the edge.

I only mentioned heat because it wasn't mentioned. I recall Rob Lee saying something about heat and speed of planing a long time ago, and he's sitting on a pile of data from testing things, I'm sure, but didn't share details above and beyond that. Given that LV didn't use a high speed steel, but instead chose a high alloy steel that wasn't high speed, it must not have been that big of a deal to them based on their testing data.
