....they tend to use very methodical methods that involve steps that most people won't need once they have a bit of sense and touch. But they need to be able to bestow their methods upon people who have little or no experience and have them work.

I learned to sharpen with charlesworth's method a dozen years ago, and it worked the first time. I wouldn't have the patience for it now. I don't remember the last time I sharpened something and it failed to be sharp. Once in a great while, an almost invisible amount of a nick will remain in an edge on a smoother and I'll have to uncouple the plane and give the iron a little bit more. But I'd rather err in that direction than over-grind and shorten the life of a good iron.

Such a tiny remaining nick doesn't stop a "test" from looking successful, anyway.

(I never check the edge, either, it's not necessary at this point)
