I have used Sorby turning tools since 1981. I got a chuckle from reading that they are soft. Maybe it depends on who is doing the turning or who is doing the sharpening. I have had no trouble turning dogwood, persimmon, Osage orange, rosewood, and other woods. Reminds me of the time I read on this forum that my carving tools were too soft for anything but pine or cherry.

Some think they can judge the quality of an edge by the number on the sharpening stone; some think they can judge the quality of the edge by looking at pictures. These are helpful guides, but what is most important is the performance: ease of use, ease of sharpening, quality of surface on the wood, longevity of the edge.
