I think the real question you are asking is what benefit would you get from sharpening sooner, given that you are planing to your satisfaction now. Here's how you might answer that. Next time you use the plane, rather than sharpening before a work session, sharpen in the middle. That way you will feel how the plane behaves initially, and you will be able to feel whatever difference may result from touching up the edge.

If you can't feel a difference, can't see a difference in the planed stock, and are not risking tearout, then there does not seem to be much point in your more frequent sharpening. If you start smooth planing more, your needs may change. I suspect most people here find it more pleasant to smooth with a plane than a sander.
