The divot on the end.. ()

I have another hypothesis regarding the material removed from the top of one end of the plane. Note that the trimmer was permanently mounted to a bench. There is evidence in the side of the fence of improperly sized screws or screwdriver used to install it. I presume that it was installed and used in a crowded work space, with other permanently installed machines, shelves, coffee pot (note the ring from the carafe on the top of the base :) ), or whatever close-by. I am guessing that there was interference, and instead of relocating the trimmer, or relocating whatever it was bumping into, they removed a small amount of the nose of one end of the plane.
