Setting the cap iron

As part of son-on-laws training we watched the Kato video. I had not watched it in a long time. (we also abandoned his near useless modern "plane" he owned and conditioned a Millers Falls #4 for service that I had bought at some flea market years ago)

It struck me upon watching it this time that tear-out was suppressed by a cap iron setting well removed from the close setting that straightened the shaving. This observation left me wondering if I have been setting it closer than necessary. Thoughts?
