One afterthought....If the plane runs in that channel, it is standing off the mitering fences about a 1/4" or so. Which means that the workpiece is unsupported where the blade comes across it. Which means that you'd get spelching on the exit side of the cut about half the time, and more than that on quartered material.

As Brian said, the channel is bizarre.
