What are they used for ()

Warren in Lancaster, PA
Traditional use for a large back saw is for cross cutting the shoulder of a tenon at the bench. The stock is held with the left hand against a sawing board or a pair of side hooks for cross cutting. The cheeks are cut with a hand saw (ripping). A lot of tenon saws today have a very great depth of cut which makes them awkward and heavy and prone to buckling.
