Now that I have re-read your post a few times, I find myself particularly interested in what you have called a 'sprung glue joint'. I didn't know there was such a thing. I see the point of it now that you have presented it. But I can't help wondering if the beginner can actually pull it off. You are saying, it seems, that by starting in the middle third of the board and moving later toward the ends that there will develop a gradual convexity to the edge. And that, furthermore, the degree of convexity depends on the amount that the blade extends from the sole of the plane. Do I have this right? There seem to be so many variables here. For example, the relative length of the plane compared to the length of the board; the time spent on the middle third, etc. I suppose, like everything else, that it's a matter of experience and practice to get the feel of it. I'll have to try it.
