Subject:
big wooden planes

I guess I'm showing what a newbie I am here, but I have a bunch of those big wooden planes that I picked up at country antique shops for about $45 each. They're about two feet long and roughly four by four inches or so square in cross section-- something like that. They've just been sitting on a back shelf for years, and I think it's about time I do something with them. But what? I don't even know what they're called. Is there some reference for how to go about refurbishing these guys? I'm sure there's a way I can mess them up by just jumping in. I did once take a weekend wooden plane making class with a fellow named Fink, and I remember much about that. But something tells me that that was different. For one thing that plane was a good deal smaller. ( I can say, though, that it's my best plane.) Some advice please.
