You're right, Charles. Odate does discuss this in the context of using a new plane blade. He also mentions using this strategy if planing a piece of wood that is more abrasive than you first thought, using the example of pine that happens to have bits of silica in it.

"Dubbing over the edge makes the blade a little less sensitive, and so less prone to chipping, but you should do this only when you have to."

So probably not an absolute prohibition against this technique, but certainly highly discouraged.
