Hollowform Problems

>I don't have a laser system to observe the thickness of walls on my hollowforms. When the entry hole is too small to see past the tool shank, how often do you stop, clear it, and measure? Every pass? I always say, "Alright, on this one, I'm going to get it really thin." Then, when turning it, I get so afraid of cutting through the side, that I always stop before I get it as thin as I want it.
How long should it take to turn, say, a 6" tall, X 4" wide hollowform? Thanks, Allen
