Looking for advice/help with a Mortar and Pestle.

>I need to make a thankyou gift and wanted to present a mortar and pestle for grinding fresh herbs.

Maple seems like a good choice for the bowl but is there something better? Do I wan't something a little bit porous? Do any of you use one and can you offer an opinion on bowl dimensions and foot size for stability etc?

I don't imagine you need to process a lot of herbs when you are just cooking at home but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
