Turning Archive 2006
>This month I am celebrating my one-year anniversary of turning wood (into dust). By way of anniversary-ing myself, I thought some levity would be good. Or wood be good.
What was the first thing you turned that you saved, and can you post a photo? Mine is the thing below. It is scrap lumber poplar, probably seven inches long. I butchered it into submission with a dull chisel (the variety of tool you strike with a hammer), then sanded it to 320. The whole thing was a dust fest. I don't think one shaving came off it the entire time. Finished with some redwood minwax stain, then parafin wax, which is pretty comical in hindsight. By rights it should have exploded off the lathe, which would have been interesting, because I didn't wear a faceshield at that time - too ignorant to get it. The next post will be my latest turning to show a little progress since then.
I've often thought it would be interesting to repeat this piece, but to change the idea a bit to make it look like a lit candle.
