From a camera's point of view

>When we look at a photo of a turned piece, we are looking for a nice smooth curve. Knowing that a camera sees the shape from one point, are we really looking at opposing sides, 180 degrees apart. Or does the camera point of view taper toward the front of the project as the diameter widens? I don't have a clue myself!
