Subject:
Tearout? when turning

Arw01
>Took a few minutes of "lessons" from a friend of mine yesterday on my mini. Showed me a couple of basics, I packed up and moved on back home. Today I started doing some work with the Mini Windsor Design set he loaned me on a Purple Heart pen blank, and a blank of Beech my son desired a "light saber" out of.

Both exhibited what I would consider tear out from using the gouge.

I was using the slowest speed, and wondering if this is a feature of technique or a dull tool or?

I touched up the edge just a bit on a course diamond stone and did not observe a difference in the surface, but it did cut quicker.
